Costa Rica Tree Descriptions - Capulin

Trema micrantha

 

Family Name: Ulnaceae
Defining Characteristics: This tree is generally less than 10 m tall.  The bark is slightly fissured and the sap has an unpleasant odor.  The leaves are alternate and hairy feeling.  It also has white/yellow flowers that are small.  The flowers are also known for not having petals.  The fruit is a fleshy orange/red color, round, and has 1 seed.  Trema is found in wet to seasonally dry forests, open spaces, secondary forests, and on the side of roads.  It is native to the area. 
Ecological Role: Trema is commonly used as a pioneer species.  The tree fruits year round and attracts birds that eat its fruit.
