Dalberghia retusa

 

Family Name: Papillonaceae
Defining Characteristics: This is a large tree reaching 25 m tall.  It is a hardwood species that is now in danger of extinction.  The wood of the Cocobolo changes color when cut and is typically orange or red/brown.  It is fine-textured and oily.  This tree is native to Central America. 
Economic Importance: This is a heavily exploited tree for its beauty and value.  It is used in gun grips and knife handles.  It is also used for fine inlay work, brush backs, bowls, pens, jewelry boxes, and musical instruments.  This wood is more expensive than the Granadillo.
