Dipteryx panamensis

 

Family Name: Fabaceae
Defining Characteristics: The Almendro can also grow to be 40 m tall.  It has large buttressed trunk with a tan splotchy/ flaky appearance. The leaves are alternate and medium sized with a blunt tip.  It has symmetrical purple flowers.  The Almendro also has fleshy fruit that is brown and oily.  This tree is found in wet or moist lowland forests and is a native. 
Ecological Role: The fruit of the Almendro is eaten by monkeys, coatis, and rodents. 
Economic Importance: The fruit of the Almendro is also fragrant and sometimes used as perfume.
