Where is San Carlos located and what’s it like?

San Carlos is considered the heart of the Zona Norte, or “Northern Region”. The county is part of the province of Alajuela, and has 13 districts: Quesada, Florencia, Buenavista, Aguas Zarcas, Venecia, Pital, Fortuna, La Tigra, Palmera, Venado (where we live), Cutris, Monterrey, Pocosol. It was founded in 1911 and is 3.347 Km squared. It boasts numerous rivers, extensive plains, and rich soil which make it one of the most productive areas in Costa Rica. Raising cattle is one of the primary industries as more than 65% of Costa Rica’s milk and more than 50% of the beef come from this area. The more than 30 sawmills demonstrate the size of the wood industry, although this economic activity has slowed in recent years because the extensive rain forests that had covered this area have practically disappeared. This is one of the very reasons why sustainable reforestation projects that can effectively promote caring for the economic as well as environmental well-being of this area are so necessary.
